Columbia Neurosurgery Docs Play in 2012 Neuro Charity Softball Tournament

On a beautiful Saturday in Central Park, the Department of Neurological Surgery, in association with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), held their 9th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament. We have some great photos here of the guys on game day as well as practicing hard before the games.

The games were held on June 9, 2012, a day Mayor Michael Bloomberg has dubbed “Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament Day” in the city of New York.

The tournament began in 2003, when then-resident Dr. Rick Komotar organized a softball game among local neurosurgery programs including NYU, Cornell, Mt. Sinai, and Columbia.

The following year, Penn, Harvard, Hopkins, and Yale were invited and at that point, Dr. Komotar says, “It just had the ring of a charity event.”

Now, with Yankee sponsorship, the tournament has grown to include 24 teams and a waiting-list of others who want to participate. It is a fun day and the money raised is for a great cause; brain tumor research.

The last two years, the Barrow Neurological Institute has come away with the championship but this year the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami took the day (bottom Left photo).
