We live in an amazing time. Incredible technology provides access to a plethora of information with just a few mouse clicks or finger taps. But even with the contents of the World Wide Web at our fingertips, it can be hard to find the right doctor if we don’t know where to look.
That’s why, for more than 20 years, Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. has been guiding patients in the right direction with their Top Doctor guidebooks. Published annually, the trusted guides name the very best doctors nationally and regionally for all specialties, including neurosurgery.
The national guide is called America’s Top Doctors, and the New York regional version is Top Doctors: New York Metro Area. There is also a guide to the best doctors for cancer care, a specialty some of our neurosurgeons also maintain, called America’s Top Doctors for Cancer. Physicians can be listed in more than one guide.
The Top Doctor guidebooks are based on peer nominations. Physicians nominate other physicians they believe provide the most outstanding care in their medical specialty. (Of course, self-nominations are not accepted.) Every year, nearly 100,000 nominations are submitted to Castle Connolly.
To determine which of the nominees are Top Doctor material, a physician-directed team at Castle Connolly pores over the nominations, assessing the doctors’ education, training, accomplishments and qualifications. Those who are selected after this rigorous vetting process earn the prestigious Top Doctor distinction.
It’s important to note that while physicians named Top Doctor are considered to be the best, there are other talented physicians not included in the guides, and a lack of Top Doctor designation does not imply a lower quality of care. The intended purpose of the Top Doctor guides is merely to help make healthcare decisions easier for patients.
Each year several of our neurosurgeons at The Spine Hospital at the Neurological Institute of New York earn a spot in the Top Doctor guides.
This year, we are pleased to announce that all eight of our spine neurosurgeons are featured in the guides. Four appear in both the national and regional guides, while Spine Hospital Director Dr. Paul C. McCormick and pediatric specialist Dr. Neil A Feldstein appear in all three.
The neurosurgeons at the Spine Hospital are known for being exceptionally talented, but for the whole department to receive such a prestigious distinction is truly a cause for celebration.
