The Barrow Neurological Institute: 2013 Neurosurgery Charity Softball Champions
Ten years ago, former Columbia Neurosurgery Resident, Dr. Rick Komotar organized a friendly little softball game among his buddies from local neurosurgery programs including NYU, Cornell, Mt. Sinai, and Columbia.
That game has grown into a tournament that today includes 32 teams representing the top neurological institutes from across the United States, Canada and now Puerto Rico.
Held every summer on a day Mayor Michael Bloomberg has dubbed “Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament Day” in the city of New York, the tournament is sponsored by the Yankees, endorsed by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and hosted by Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital.
On Saturday, June 1, 2013 spectators once again flocked to Central Park for the 10th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament where thousands of dollars were raised for the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation of the AANS.
Everyone played hard and well on this jocular day but in the end, The Barrow Neurological Institute from Phoenix, Arizona came out ahead. They beat out Florida, 20-7, in the finals, making this their third championship in four years.
